Sensitive and Sustainable Design

Throughout the planning and development process, the guiding principle has been to respect and maintain the site's conservation value, within the framework of best practice in urban design, including the provision for affordable housing.

The result is a perfect example of how a new development and local landmark buildings can be integrated in a sustainable way, to provide a desirable location with an emphasis on quality throughout.

A third of the available space is now given over to landscaped green areas. The tennis courts from the existing Butterfly Tennis Club also remain in place – and the decision to accommodate parking underground has created additional room for shared amenity spaces.

"What an exciting opportunity for an architect and architecture to bring life back to the 1880 circa Mary Datchelor Victorian Girls School and the 1926 Curtis Green building, with an array of stunning apartments. Our response was to create dramatic apartments within the existing fabric, bringing immense rays of daylight through the tall windows. To accompany the school buildings, the design of the impressive Georgian townhouses with attention to the proportions, materials and detail, will dramatically strengthen the street and surrounding areas. The results are having a distinctive home, central to the city, but having the tranquil surroundings of a garden within the leafy conservation area."
